Problem is the Doctor regenerates shortly thereafter-although some of the spin-off material/fan theories of course have the season 6B theory, that since we don't really see Troughton transition directly into Pertwee, that somehow he managed to escape for a while and had a few more adventures. It also sort of works with "Two Doctors" in which the Second Doctor is even older (Although it was only really filmed a year or two after "Five"; Troughton simply didn't wear a wig this time and his gray hair is more visible) and working for the time lords(despite pretty much running from them for the entirety of his first two lives). Of course then you'd have to explain how Jaime got his memories back, and why Victoria is traveling with them again....

Another explanation is that the second Doctor seen in "Five" and "Two" Doctors is in fact, a future Doctor revisiting an old face, like (possibly) the curator.

Of course both explanations have quite a few problems, but Who continuity has never really been that strong.

Any Big Finish fans in here. I just listened to Dark Eyes 4, it was a great end to that series. Now on to Doom Coalition. So far, the new villain, The Eleven, is a real cool concept, a schizophrenic Time Lord who has all his past lives still alive inside his mind.
I also listened to the first Tennant audios. Those were cool but lacked an arc, which was disappointing. Either way, it was great hearing 10 and Donna Noble back in action.

They've played with that a bit with the Doctor too-Davison for instance in "Castrovalva" and "Twin Dillema" and a bit in "Trial of a Time Lord". However in at least the first two cases it's kind of the Doctor's regeneration causing some sort of mental regression, and not all the incarnations speaking at once. The novels do have a bit of a recurring storyline about how the part of the Doctor's mind that's the Sixth Doctor hates that he became the Seventh, and this aspect of the Doctor is actually given form via the Land of Fiction (From the Mind Robber) in "Head Games" (This was a time in fandom when the Sixth Doctor was sort of looked down upon, although the Doctor has been somewhat redeemed since with the BF audios).

If you want some good behind the scenes drama between series (and a way to revive this thread), look at the very public and unprofessional blame game between John Barrowman and Stephen Moffat over why Torchwood hasn't come back.

In this video, Barrowman very heavily hints that it's Moffat's fault for blocking the return of Torchwood.

Moffat has responded here that not only has he not blocked Torchwood's return, but he couldn't if he wanted to.

The question for this thread is, would anyone want to see Torchwood return?

Not me. I was never a fan of that show.

The first two series of that show is a good argument for Chibnall not taking over. It was like a 90s comic in TV form.

Barrowman yes ... Torchwood as a show ... no.

Barrowman might be too old to appear as Harkness anymore. He's on Arrow right now and he looks much older than when he played on DW and Torchwood. That's a problem since he's immortal.

John Barrowman is not as difficult as Alex Kingston. River Song was often going backward in her timeline. Jack Harkness is going forward through his. And in theory, he becomes the Face of Boe--which would suggest he ages, but slowly (as I think the Tenth Doctor surmises in one episode). So just pluck Captain Jack from his timeline a million years later. In any case, Barrowman looks remarkably young for his age (dang him).

Plus these things can always be explained in some other way, as well. For instance, River has Time Lady energies in her which may have odd effects on her ageing process.

It could be pulled off. I said he might be too old to play the role, but I don't think it would be impossible.

As far being the Face of Boe, that was hinted as a possible theory, but not a definitive truth.

Yup. But in offering the theory, the Doctor suggests that it's possible for Captain Jack to age, just very slowly. I'm not saying that Jack is the Face of Boe, as I know this is a matter of some debate--and it limits what can happen to Harkness. Timelines change.

I think the writers/producers build in these little call-outs, because they're aware that things like ageing actors might be a problem that will come up in the future--and they know the audience is thinking about these things.

It has returned, both on audio and in comic form. The audios from Big Finish are phenomenal, with some amazing looking releases for the tenth anniversary of the show. Can't wait for The Torchwood Archive, and the next set of stories includes one with Rhys' mum as played by Nerys Hughes. My absolute favorite so far is 1.6 More Than This.
