    That's 28 down and 972 to go!

I'm glad I caught up on Mr. Miracle and Doomsday Clock. Now I don't need to worry about stumbling onto spoilers.

The only other time I read Identity Crisis is as it came out back in the day. While many books sometimes read better as trades, this is one that was much more entertaining as monthly installments. That might be a litte unfair because I already knew the "twist", and that definitely contributes to a lackluster re-reading. That last act though, man. So underwhelming.

Read the first Cloak and Dagger limited series for the first time for about 15 years ago. Have been thinking about picking up the trade (which as a lot content I haven't read either). Sounds like it stills holds up. I'm especially thinking about how Cloak is being portrayed since a lot have happen with the characterisation of black characters since then which still seams to have problem to this day. While there is still problems with female characterisation those seems to be less so than with black characters. At least the have a lot more representation than the used to.
The Cloak and Dagger series for better or worse is very early 80's. I tend to like that era. You could tell that the creators wanted to go for something grittier than "a very special episode" without succumbing completely to the "grimdark" trend that was just around the corner. I feel that even with the 80's tropes, Dagger is a fairly strong female character(as is the detective featured throughout the story) and that Cloak is portrayed as respectfully(if not a little clumsily).

I can totally see how the solicit doesn't do the story justice. The writer (Donny Cates) does a good job creating his own mythology while creating compelling characters and telling a touching story about families- particularly about the relationships between fathers and sons. There's definitely a Kirby/New Gods feel to it(which I believe is intentional). Cates is able to channel that influence while creating something that still feels fresh and unique. As high concept as the story is, there's definitely heart in it and Cates is able to make it FUN instead of heavy. The art is tremendous. Plus it is by far the best story about a talking sword that I've ever read.
So- Great characters. Great art. Talking sword. What more could you want?

    update:

    The Stand Omnibus (31)

-Really enjoyed this for the most part. It bogged down a little at times early on, but kept me engaged throughout once it hit its stride. The companion volume was just a bunch of filler. Would have preferred Marvel not include it (or just cherry pick some for one volume) and lower the price. And yes, the binding did live up (or down?) to its bad reputation. Block was completely separated from the spine upon opening, but sewing did hold together as i read it as i normally would've.

The Rocketeer Complete Collection HC (7)

-This is the oversized slipcase version (IDW) that collects all of Stevens' work with the character. Art was fantatstic, and the story definitely had an old school charm to it that fit the era it represented beautifully. Would probably only recommend this version to hardcore fans, as half the book is extras, so i don't think it warrants the price tag.

    Descender TP v5 (5)

    - This series reminds me a lot of Saga, in that it's just a quick, entertaining read without too much depth. I think i read this whole trade in like 30 minutes. Lemire has mentioned the next trade will wrap up this series, but also made comments that he has more planned for the future, in some capacity

    Black Hammer TP v2 (6)

-This is probably my favorite series right now (since Lazarus is on hiatus). It's just great super hero comics at its core. I love the silly "silver age" flashbacks, and the riffs on popular characters and covers, and the story is damn compelling as well.

    Cannibal TP v2 (4)

-Another criminally underrated series. Manages to make its own mark in a zombie genre that has pretty much seen it all at this point. The way volume 2 ended, I'm not sure what's next, as i haven't seen any solicits for future issues, but their are definitely threads left to be explored.

    Spider-Gwen HC v2 (11)

-This book won't win any Eisner's, but it's a lot of fun. A little peeved they didn't include the other issues from the Spider-Women crossover because it had major implications for Gwen (and Silk) and her universe. But that would've been another 6 issues and that's probably expecting a little too much from Marvel

    Vision HC (12)

-Not my favorite thing I've read this year, but worthy of the hype. Several moments i had to just stop and let actions marinate, or ponder what was spoken. It was a very thoughtful book i guess is the best was i can put it. Kudos to Marvel for letting King tell this type of story. I wish they'd take even more chances like this, even at a loss. Works like this prop up comics in general as a whole.

    57 + 76 = 133 for the year

    So far I've read:

    January

Most of Mark Waid's Captain America omnibus (41 issues). I just couldn't get into it and couldn't even be bothered to finish (first time that's ever happened!)
Paper Girls deluxe (10 issues). I liked it and and will be picking up volume 2 when it's released.
Hellboy LE 1&2: (20 issues) So good I ordered the rest of them and the BPRD/Abe Sapien hardbacks.
Doom Patrol omnibus by Morrison(46 issues). Really enjoyed it, the last few issues especially. I'd only read his Batman before this and will have to pick up some of his other stuff.
Maus: (12 issues) Fantastic, very different to what I usually read.

    Total for month: 129 issues
    Total so far: 129 issues

    February

    Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus 2: 18 issues
    Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus 3: 38 issues
    Spider-Man by Roger Stern Omnibus:

    Total for month: 56 issues
    Total so far: 185 issues
