Default Original Golden Age Crimson Avenger (Lee Travis) appreciation thread

He was DC's first masked "mystery man", making his initial appearance in Detective Comics #20 (October 1938), seven issues before "The Bat-Man" debuted in that title. (NOTE: Superman's first appearance pre-dated The Crimson Avenger by a few months, but Superman wasn't a masked hero.)

While the character eventually traded in his cloak/coat and hat outfit for a more spandex/superhero-looking costume, it was back in the mid-1980s that Roy Thomas put more focus back on his original attire.

By the way, two issues after Roy Thomas wrote the Secret Origins issue with the Crimson Avenger (Secret Origins #5, August 1986), he included "The Crimson" in "The Secret Origin of the Golden Age Sandman" where Sandman encountered the "Phantom of the Fair".

Ten years later, when Matt Wagner and Steven T. Seagle wrote a four-issue arc in Sandman Mystery Theatre featuring the Phantom of the Fair, Crimson Avenger showed up for a brief appearance.

Considering he was DC’s first masked hero, he deserved better when they killed him off originally in DC Comics Presents #38... Being killed off in a back up story was a sad end.

But, actually, that story ("Whatever Happened to the Crimson Avenger?") is one that many people have thought quite highly of.

It was a great story, but it deserved to be more than a backup story.

Crimson Avenger was DC's Green Hornet, right? Or am I confusing him with one of a dozen other mystery men.

Just like the sci-fi from the Silver Age, time has not aged these concepts well.

I was hoping to see a revival of the Crimson Avenger on Earth 2. We all know how that worked out.

It appears that initially he was pretty much a clone of the Green Hornet, but as time went on his character changed.

In the right hands, he could always become more popular, but I don't know if that could happen these days or not.

By the way, Lee wore the red cloak-and-hat outfit from Detective Comics #20 (October1938) through issue #43 (September 1940).

In Detective Comics #44 (October1940), he switched to red-and-gold costume.

(Though, personally, I prefer his original look.)

Pretty sure the first time I saw him was in my Famous First Edition copy of Detective Comics #27 40-something years ago, though I most likely saw Lee wearing the red-and-gold costume in a back issue of Justice League of America not that much later.

I first saw him during the three-issue arc in Justice League of America in 1972 when during the annual JLA/JSA meeting the members travelled through time to find the forgotten Seven Soldiers of Victory.

What year were the Seven Soldiers lost in time? 1947?
