Default Ben Reilly: the Scarlet Spider #18 Spoilers/Review

Hello again, friends! It's a beautiful Wednesday, and we are lucky enough to read another installment of Ben Reilly's adventures in Las Vegas.

And I'll tell you what: if you're someone who hasn't been thrilled with the earlier issues (or Ben's characterization) - well, I suggest picking this one up!

But let's start at the beginning:

    1) The subplot about the doctor working on a cure for the disease that plagues Abigail gets a single beat pushed forward, but then Ben gets distracted by his spider-sense.

    2) Misty, Daughter of Mysterio has arrived!!! Her first trick? Make the Mercury Rising casino disappear! She appears to want some magic doohickey, but 'ole Quentin Beck just wants her to give up magic :/

    3) The return of Dusk! Which requires me to stand on this nearby box of soap ---

One thing that I find interesting about PAD's portrayal of Dusk is the slight alteration in powers; that is, I don't recall the old Slingers issues ever explicitly linking her teleportation powers to shadows; in fact, I don't even recall the writer implying it! (I could be wrong, though: it's certainly been a minute since I dusted off my boxed back issues.) But it's kind of a fun addition, and who am I to be mad at the first writer who seems interested in using the character in twenty years?! I think PAD gets her voice right, and maybe the tweaks to her powers will result in a more unique and therefore popular position in the Marvel Universe. (Although I hope PAD remembers that, under the right conditions, Dusk has the power to level an entire army!) Regardless, I like the banter between Ben and Cassie, and I look forward to seeing them work together as the arc continues!

    4) Speaking of banter, we get another excellent encounter between Ben and Kaine! Nothing crazy happens - I just got a kick out of their conversation. And honestly, it was at this point in the issue that I realized that, in this issue, for the first time this series, Ben really sounds like the Ben of old. I believe that the fans of Ben who really didn't like the Jackal-version of Ben - or the subsequent Scarlet Deadpool - will enjoy PAD's characterization of Ben in this issue. I don't know exactly why I feel that way, but I do.

    5) BTW - I continue to get a kick out of Cassandra Mercury calling Ben "Peter." As I've mentioned before, I like PAD's decision to continually remind us that everything Ben does will always be measured up to what Peter would do. Also, from an out-of-story point of view, I think it's neat that a future writer of Amazing Spider-Man might potentially have the ability to bring back the obscure Cassandra Mercury to plague Peter, who would obviously be baffled. It'd be like the Raptor story, except you wouldn't have to retcon anything.

    6) The cliffhanger! Ben and Cassie against the Father and Daughter Mysterio is bad enough, but Kaine might have it worse: defending the casino from Mindless Ones in a crazy alternate dimension! (As if the citizens of Las Vegas needed more interdimensional shenanigans!)

I can't wait to hear what everyone thought about the issue!

-Pav, who does miss the purple haze that used to surround Dusk...

Cassandra is a casino owner with a terminally ill daughter, whom Ben is trying to find a cure for.

I thought this was a good issue; it felt like things were back on track after the distraction of the Damnation tie-in. Mysterio is a great villain, so I hope he and his daughter pose a suitable threat. And the banter between Ben and Kaine was fun to read.

Decent chapter. I love conversations between Ben and Kaine. They sorta hate each other but are willing to help each other? I don't know how to name it. Only thing that bothered me through reading was the art. I wish the art would be the same as it was in previous chapter.
I'm still waiting for reconciliation between Ben and Peter.

Same here, more or less. As for how to describe Ben and Kaine's interaction, they may (somewhat) hate each other, but they're brothers, down to the last blood cell, so that makes them family, and family always sticks together, for better or worse.
The spider is always on the hunt.

Yeah: decent. This book has had far better issues.
Ben & Kaine could do with more visually dynamic costumes. I agree with you about the art.
Intro of Mysteria could prove interesting.
Continuity of Mindless Ones could be not 'mindful' of canon.
Dusk could guest star regularly as a welcome supporting cast.
ComicBook_com Christian Hoffer's could have nailed it with his observation too.

The creative team slowly turned this book into a promising diamond after the understandibly rocky start. Good plot hooks, good character arcs, fun character interactions, good supporting cast and moments and dinamic covers.

What it needs is some pizaah, something uniquely its own altho it`s going there. It reads differently than other Spider books but it could stand out more among the marvel rack but as far as I am concerned, I have been throughly enjoying the book`s crescendo for some months now and it`s been a pleasant surprise. Not perfect, but rarely a book is.

Hopefully they keep expanding the core of the book. Ben dealing with the supernatural realm often as well as misfits of the Marvel Universe seems a cool enough core.

    P.S: Still like the costumes.

So , I have a question about ben’s spider sense- how exactly does it work? He could sense mysteria planning something bad- before she had actually done anything? Can he really sense somone’s Evil intent if he hadn’t even met them?

That`s a good question. Classically, his spider sense worked similarly the way it works on Peter but from the start the simbionte failed to take over him so he`s not exactly like Peter either.

I got to re-read the issue again but I while suspicious, I though his sense started tingling when she started the performance and that`s somewhat par the standard but I wouldn`t mind his experiences being shaped into sensing things Peter wouldn`t or as well.
