I really like the half mask. It offers protection for her identity, but still lets us see her eyes. A full mask would be more realistic, but I can suspend disbelief enough that this doesn't bother me.

I suppose that Stephanie's mask is better than say Batman's. Steph's mask at least covers up the most distinctive/recognizable portion of her face. And if she keeps her hood up most of the time, then it's a pretty effective disguise.

She might have to be built up from scratch, but that does not necessarily have to be a slow process. Look how quickly Harper Row's skills developed in only a short amount of on-page time. Also this time she finds out who Bruce Wayne is a lot sooner and no teen pregnancy.

Well, we know that she's already become Spoiler by the time of Batman #28 (which takes place somewhere in the 40's of Eternal). So she's going to be suiting up relatively quickly.

Yes we know that she has the suit, but especially as she is shown as a captive not what if any skills she might already have. As she did not know her father was a criminal she would not have acquired any of his criminal skills, but she could be a gymnast, a martial artist or even have better computer skills than Barbara Gordon currently has. Perhaps all we need is a Rocky style training montage to push her back up to her previous Batgirl level skills.

But we also know that Batman won't be encountering her until that time, so it might not be that quickly.

Yeppers, my interest in Eternal is waning some. I'm just not that into old-time gangsters or the whole "this is my city" feud that Batman and Falcone seem to have going on. But I still hope this retelling of War Games will get Steph right, making her a heroine rather than a fall gal.

I really liked Steph as Batgirl, but I think over all...I much prefer her as Spoiler. It's her identity, her own special little nook in the Batworld. Really can't wait for more of her story in Eternal to unfold.

I think the Falcone stuff is just a prelude to the big stuff. Remember we also have The Spectre running around and a souped-up Deacon Blackfire making waves.

Here are the plots for my idea for a NuSpoiler Nu52 ongoing from the old thread.

    Spoiler #1 Plot
A small armed gang attempts to rob a convenience store in Gotham Heights, but is stopped by the eggplant avenger. The perps escape, but without any money. Spoiler reflects that the vigilantes of the city proper would have been able to capture the gang, but on the other hand they have better tech and weapons, like grappling guns instead of hooks, and higher buildings to jump down from and climb back up when the action stops.

A short while later her "Spoiler signal," aka a communicator she painted purple, rings. She sees that she is being called by Alvin Draper, and her mood immediately brightens. Alvin Draper is Tim Drake, aka Red Robin of the Teen Titans. He is calling to see how she's doing, since today is the first anniversary of the day she had her baby and gave the child up for adoption. She tells him that she is trying not to think about it. She doesn't even know the gender of her child, let alone which foster parents he/she lives with now. Tim and Steph each say that they miss the other before hanging up.

Steph comes home in her civies and sees her mother smoking and watching television. She puts a container of pills from the local pharmacy on the kitchen table and storms off to her room without saying anything. Her mother had found the strength to overcome her addictions in order to help Steph through her pregnancy, and they had grown close for the first time in Steph's life, but Steph's almost dying due to complications during labor caused her mother to slip back into depression and her old habits. Once agin Steph is primarily a pair of legs to go to the pharmacy to her mother.

Steph is about to get started on her homework, but first checks her email. She received a google alert about Arthur Brown, her father, otherwise known as the Cluemaster. He broke out of Blackgate Prison earlier that day. Steph decides to forget about her homework as she owes it to her father to "make him another knuckle sandwich for our father-daughter reunion."

Several days later, the Spoiler is dragging the super-fat Czonka, aka the Baffler, across the ground, wishing out loud that he'd lay off the doughnuts. She reflects that her father hasn't been in contact with any of his old associates, which means that he is either teaming up with someone new, or that he decided to skip town altogether. If the latter turns out to be the case Steph will have to call one of the "big boys" to find her father and cart him back to jail.

That night, Batman and Robin (Damian) are driving in the Batmobile, when they hear over the police frequencies that an amber alert has been issued in the Gotham Heights area. Upon hearing the name of the abductee, Batman immediately does a sharp uturn. Robin asks what could be so important as to pull them off the case they are currently working on. Batman doesn't answer him.

The next day, Steph gets home from school and checks the mail. It is mostly bills she'll have to pay out of the salary from her part time job, but one letter causes her to gasp. She opens the letter, and as she reads it, her eyes harden into a glare that would frighten off even the Joker.

She was wrong. She is not going to be giving her father a knuckle sandwich, or sending him back to jail. She is going to kill him with her own two hands, and this time not even Batman is going to stop her.

    Spoiler #2
Spoiler lands on the roof of the local orphanage with the intent of seeing from their records if the baby Cluemaster has kidnapped is indeed her child. The point is moot, however, as the presence of Batman and Robin on the roof confirms her fears.

Batman demands that she leave this case to them, and Spoiler demands that they stay out of her way. Robin scoffs and remarks about her ineptitude. Batman asks if she plans to kill her father, and she replies yes; he has gone too far this time. After some more back and forth Robin loses his temper completely and attacks Spoiler. They trade blows for a few moments before he compares her qualifications to be a mother to those of Talia al Ghoul This pushes Spoiler's buttons, and she loses it completely and cuts loose, starting to beat the crap out of Robin before Batman restrains her.

Spoiler starts to calm down, and is horrified by what she almost did to Damian, who is actually slightly impressed. Spoiler insists to Batman that she has to finish this and turns to leave. But before she swings away she thanks Robin for reminding her of what she does not want to become. Robin frowns and insists that she is too dumb to learn anything, even from as skilled a teacher as him.

As she jumps across the rooftops of Gotham Heights Spoiler wonders if Batman intended for Robin to knock some sense back into her. Batman was always very vocal about his disapproval of her being the Spoiler, and was actually nicer than usual to her.

She enters the yard of a house and peers though the window at the living room. Her daughter was adopted by an upper-middle class couple who could not have children of their own. Both adoptive parents are home, and Spoiler see's how distraught they are.

Spoiler climbs a tree and enters her daughters room through another window. She takes her mask off as she looks around. She smiles at several dolls in the likeness of Batman and Superman, remembering her own fascination with those heroes in grade school.

Steph had wanted to keep her child out of this world, away from the violence and drugs that plagued her family. But her world reached out and took the child. And Steph doesn't know if she can save her. Cluemaster has already proven more than once that he does not care if his plans get his daughter killed. She has no reason to believe he'd value his granddaughter's life any more.

Steph bends down and picks up a toy helicopter. It is too advanced a toy of a twelve month old baby. She looks around, spotting several more toy helicopters strewn about. Someone had been in there and left the helicopters as a clue. She puts the first helicopter down and realizes that they are arranged in a circle. She silently thanks Tim for being a nerd and forcing her to read Asimov's Foundation series, because she now knows where her father has taken her child.

    Spoiler #3

Circles and helicopters. The clues lead back to one place, Castleland Park Mall, where Spoiler first stopped one of her father's schemes and prevented his escape by helicopter. The mall is derilict now, having been abandoned after one of the many catastrophes to befall Gotham over the years.

Spoiler finds Cluemaster with the baby on the roof of the mall, standing close to the edge behind a video camera hooked up to a laptop. He welcomes his daughter and comments that she was smart not to bring "the bat and the bird," as he'd drop the kid at the first sign of either of them. He then relates how he deliberately left false clues in the baby's room for the dynamic duo to follow and only went back and added the helicopters after they had aready searched the house, so there is no chance of them arriving. Spoiler says that he has reached a new low, but tells him to give up quietly. Cluemaster says that it is she will will have to give up. He holds her now screaming daughter over the edge of the roof and demands that Spoiler take off her mask and "tell the world who you really are."

Spoiler realizes that her father is trying to do what even Batman couldn't, make her give up on the vigilante life altogether. The camera and laptop are already uploading the video of her to the internet and if she takes off her mask now the entire world will know who Spoiler is. With her identity so badly compromised she will not be able to operate as the Spoiler anymore, and she will be out of her father's hair for good. Heck, she'd probably be killed within a week by one of the many enemies the Spoiler had made.

But the distance between herself and her father is too great. If she makes a move he'll drop the baby before she could stop him, and from that height the fall would be fatal for a toddler.

Cluemaster says that he is waiting, and Spoiler looks directly into the camera and pulls back her hood. She removes her cape, and then her mask, and finally says her full name. Cluemaster orders her to say it louder, and she complies.

Cluemaster says "good" and walks slightly away from the edge. He tells Stephanie that she can go now, and that the baby will be returned to her foster parents. Stephanie glares at him and asks if he really thinks she's going to let him go after everything he's done. He laughs and says it's over.

Stephanie starts taking a few steps forwards, and asks if why he thought that just because she had taken off her mask it meant that she had given up. "You may be my father, but you don't know me at all."

Steph's confidence starts to unnerve Cluemaster, and he decides to see just how many people already know who the Spoiler is. But he starts to scream as he examines the computer, which has been disconnected from the internet. Seeing her father start to panic, Steph breaks into a run. To keep her away while he escapes, Cluemaster throws the baby off of the roof.

Steph yells "NO!" and leaps off the roof as well, catching the child in midair and turning her body so that she takes the full brunt of the fall. The impact knocks the wind out of Steph, but the child is fine. Steph sits up and hugs the crying toddler, saying "It's ok. Mommy's here." She cries as well, though her tears are tears of joy.

On the roof, Robin looks down at the ground and asks Batman why Steph isn't coming back up to deal with the Cluemaster. Batman says that she knew they were following her the entire time, and that they'd have no trouble with Cluemaster once the baby was safe.

A couple of days later, Steph knocks on the door to the foster parents' house. She introduces herself and apologizes for her father's actions. The foster parents are wary of Steph, but invite her in. Steph refuses, as she does not want her daughter to be part of the world she and her father live in. She only wanted to see what kind of people were rasing her child, and to give the child one thing. A toy version of the hero who saved her, a doll Steph sewed that looks like the Spoiler.

As Steph leaves she is accosted by Damian, who is still confused by her actions, and the fact that she is crying and smiling at the same time. He says that he cannot understand her, and asks how she can react this way when she had just all but given up her child for the second time. Steph, wiping her eyes and shaking her head, says she pities Damian and even Bruce, because "You don't know what it is like to have that certainty that just once in your life, you made the right choice."

Steph walks away, and Damian looks through the window into the living room, where the family is sitting happily, the baby hugging the Spoiler doll.

    Spoiler #4

Steph is finishing a difficult manuver in gym class when she hears a familiar voice yell "Hi, Stephanie Brown!" She thinks 'oh crap' before landing painfully on her backside, having been distracted from her acrobatics.

Rather than the laughter she expected, Steph hears screams from her fellow students. Turning her head, she realizes she shouldn't have been surprised by their reaction. 'It's not every day a blue witch boy with a murderous cat barges in on an all girls gym session.'

The gym teacher kicks Klarion out, much to his chagrin. He shows up again in the girls' locker room, causing even more screaming. When one girls yells at the "pervert!" he gets annoyed and turns the entire class except for Steph into frogs. Steph stands horrified holding her shirt half way down her abdomen, while Klarion is very pleased that the noise is gone.

Steph yells "What the hell is with you and turning people into frogs?!" Klarion is not sure what the problem is. Steph says never mind as long as he changes them back. She then gets around to asking him what he's doing there.

Klarion begins a long winded speech about Halloween coming up when Steph cuts him off and says that she already guessed this had something to do with Halloween and that he should just cut to the point.

Limbo Town is going to hold a Halloween costume party, and Klarion needs a date to attend, and Steph is the only option he has. Steph says she already has plans for Halloween and that even if she didn't she wouldn't be interested. Klarion begs, saying that he'll be embarassed forever if he shows up alone. When Steph says she doesn't care he 'implies' that he will leave her classmates stuck as frogs forever "Dun, dun dun!"

All Hallow's Eve: Spoiler and Klarion (dressed as Abraham Lincoln in his top hat) arrive in Limbo Town for the costume party. Spoiler asks if anyone is going to try to kill her for not being a witch this time. Klarion says not to worry, that no one will notice due to her costume. He points out a group of witch boys and girls dressed as 'blue rafters' superheroes like Batman, Superman, and the Flash. Several of them approach Spoiler and Klarion and ask who she is dressed as, as she is clearly wearing a superheo outfit. Steph takes the opportunity to play up Spoiler as the greatest hero ever, and the Limbo Twon residents eat it up. One resident compliments Steph on her craftsmanship, saying that her Spoiler costume looks like a real superhero outfit.

They move on, and Klarion states that he didn't know all those things about Spoiler, rather impressed. Steph acts haughty, glad to finally be on the receiving end of some hero worship, 'even if it is only from a bunch of blue man group rejects.'

Klarion begins to fidget, and Steph asks what's wrong. He says "Randall." A big, hulking witch boy dressed as a wrestler accosts them, and says that the sky must be rising, because Klarion actually has a date. He asks Klarion about her, and Steph gets annoyed at being spoken about in the third person. Randall takes her protest personally, and Klarion has to step between them. Randall is clearly looking for a fight with the scared Klarion, and Steph thinks that bullies are the same everywhere, 'except that these bullies can turn you into Mighty Mouse.'

Randall and Klarion each prepare to cast spells at each other when Steph throws her belt rope around Randall's legs, pulling so that he falls over. All of the residents immediately surrounding them look at her, and she asks "What? Are you questioning my spell casting?" Eceryone then goes back to what they were doing.

Back in the real world, Klarion thanks Steph for saving him from immense embarrassment and asks if she's hungry since she didn't eat anything at the party. Steph replies that she is a picky eater; she won't touch food that tastes like blood. Klarion says that he hopes to see her again soon, and Steph says "no way." She also threatens that if he turns any of her friends into anything funny again she'll turn him into "a big blue lump." Klarion makes no promises.

After Klarion leaves Steph thinks to herself that sheis starving and wonders if anyone is still accepting trick or treaters at that hour.

    Spoiler #5

The Ghost Dragons' attempt to start a protection racket in Gotham Heights is stopped by the new hero, the Spoiler. The gang escapes back to their leader, Lynx, who demands that they hunt down this interfering girl because the suburbs are too important for the dragons. The next night, Spoiler and "Red" Robin crash their hideout, much to Lynx's pleasure. The teenage heroes are overwhelmed, and at one point as Robin knocks Spoiler out of the way of gunfire he screams "Steph!" They hide, and Spoiler chides him for yelling her real name in front of the bad guys. He says he has a plan for how to escape.

    The Present

Steph is walking home from school, thanking god that that boring day is over. She thinks to herself that if she doesn't see some action first she'll fall asleep over her homework out of sheer boredom. Coffee would help too, and be less distracting, but butt-kicking is where it's at.

As luck would have it, she spots a large, suspicious looking man in an oversized trench coat in front of her. Recognizing from the walk the tell tale signs of a man with concealed weapons, Steph decides to follow him to see what kind of trouble he's looking to get into. Several blocks later, the man enters the passenger side of a parked black car.

Steph is making a mental note of the license plate so she can change into her costume to follow the car from the rooftops when she hears a clicking noise from right behind her. 'Crap.' she thinks, realizing that someone is holding a gun to her back. The second man tells her not to make any sudden movements and to get into the car. "Spoiler." he adds.

    'Double crap.'

Steph is blindfolded and her hands bound as they drive their destination. Her abductees find her costume and her gear in her schoolbag. 'So I have to get out of this one with no shurikens or grapples. Least they didn't take my sunny outlook.' She figures that they don't want her dead yet, since otherwise she'd be 'holy,' so she decides to put on her Bart Simpson 'are we there yet?' impersonation to annoy them into giving something away about who they are. Eventually the driver mutters that he sees why Tiger and Lynx wanted this girl dead so badly.

    'Triple crap.'

At their destination, Steph is led to a chair where, after she is forced to sit, her blindfold is removed and her hands are freed. She is sitting at a set table in front of a large, blonde man in his mid-thirties. He introduces himself as the Horntail, the new leader of the Ghost Dragons. Steph compliments him on being the first leader to choose the name of a dragon while surveying her situation. Two armed guards, and she has to assume Horntail knows how to fight like King Snake and Lynx did. There is a narrow window, at least.

Horntail tells her to eat the rice dish in front of her, taking a sample himself to prove it isn't poisoned. Steph starts to eat slowly, and asks how they figured out her identity and why she isn't dead yet.

Horntail says that the Dragons have known that her real name was Stephanie since the fight with Red Robin two years earlier, but it was such a common name that it did not help much in narrowing their list down. So without anything on her they were forced to stay away from Gotham heights for the past two years. But the recent kidnapping incident made them realize that Spoiler was connected to the Cluemaster, and that since they already had her name it was simple to find her.

As for why she is still alive, Horntail says that he is not like Lynx. He respects talent and hates to see it wasted. So he offers her a job. She can be a part of their protection racket in Gotham Heights, perhaps even be put in charge after a short while. Horntail is certain she can be just as effective with non-lethal methods as many of his best enforcers are with lethal ones. She would be extremely well compensated, and the alternative is she dies here and now.

Steph, while still chewing her rice, says that she hates multiple choice tests. The 'correct' answer may always be in right in front of her, but she always has to look for some other answer not listed. She throws her plate like a frisbe into Horntail's face. She stands up as the guards draw their guns and picks up her chair. She smashed it over the head of the first guard, breaking it into many pieces. She grabs two broken off wooden legs and uses them to quickly bludgeon the second guard.

Horntail says it is a pity she choose this path, rolling up his sleeves. Steph apologizes for spoiling the meal. It seems she is about to throw down with Horntail when she tosses away the table legs and breaks for the window. It is so narrow she needs to make the jump perfect to get through it, but not for nothing is she the best gymnyst in any of the local high schools. She makes it outside, though not without cutting herself on the shards of glass.

Upon landing, thankfully less than ten feet below the window, she smiles and thinks to herself 'Just call me Jackie Chan.' But she has to run, as gang members begin steaming out of the main entrance with semi-automatic weapons. There is a large empty parking lot to cover, but beyond it is a street with many stores, and when she reaches it she is able to blend into the crowd.

Steph realizes with her identity compromised this badly she can't go home. The Ghost Dragons don't attack family, so they will leave her mother and daughter alone, but Stephanie Brown needs to disappear. She spends hours either cutting across alleys or staying in areas as crowded as possible until she reaches what she considers to be the safest place around right now, the Reverend Knutland's church. She climbs the building to sneak into the attic, where she has a stored spare Spoiler costume to put on. She is relieved to find the Reverend downstairs, and he gives her permission to use the church as a base for a short time, as the congregation owes her a great deal.

Spoiler goes into the office and uses the church's phone. She hopes he picks up this time, as he's unreliable that way. But a miracle happens, and the phone is answered.

"Tim, I really need your help."
