Irma: Five dead at Florida nursing home left without power

Police evacuated 115 residents on Wednesday from the facility, which the storm left without air conditioning.

Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief said three were found dead at the Hollywood Hills nursing home. Two others died after reaching hospital.

Ten million people are still without power in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas after Hurricane Irma.

Irma - which has claimed more than two dozen lives in the US - struck southwestern Florida on Sunday morning as a category four storm before weakening to a tropical depression on Monday.

It is not the only Florida nursing home that has been left without power by Irma.
More than half of a large retirement community in Pembroke Pines, Florida, still had no electricity by Wednesday morning, leaving elderly residents stuck in rooms with no access to lifts.

Pembroke Pines police spokeswoman Amanda Conwell told the Miami Herald that officers were at the scene.

She said some of the 15,000 residents at Century Village were vulnerable and "we are concerned about their welfare".

Another assisted care facility for dementia patients in Fort Myers, Florida, went without power for three days after Hurricane Irma as elderly patients suffered in the rising heat.

Cape Coral Shores kept 20 patients during the storm as part of an agreement with authorities because local emergency shelters had been evacuated as Irma bore down on the coast.

Supreme Court Puts Redrawing Of Texas Electoral Maps On Hold

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An ideologically divided U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday handed a win to Republicans in Texas by putting on hold rulings that said electoral districts drawn by state lawmakers discriminated against minority voters.

On a 5-4 vote, with the court’s conservatives in the majority and the liberal justices dissenting, the court in a brief order blocked two different lower court decisions that found fault with both congressional districts and state legislative districts drawn by the Republican-controlled state legislature.

So, is this really all that unites Trump's supporters? Food for thought.

I thought this was a bit silly at first, but I think Klepper is on to something here

I saw it as more of a symbolic thing than anything else

I have a friend who is a corporate lawyer, handles insurance and actuary type stuff, she's told me countless stories of male execs straight up violating her space because they see nothing wrong with it and there will be no repercussions

now I agree that Orange Foolius was way worse to Jeb than to HRC in may instances, this is just a visual representation of that white male corporate culture

For me it seems more like a strategy to make the opponent uncomfortable, i saw in the history channel that Kennedy arrived late to his debate with Nixon on purpose so Nixon could get desperate, i think he arrived 20 minutes late and by that time Nixon was sweating which made him look bad in front of the camera.

I think he might do for Hannity what Colbert did for O'Reilly.

You have to be Arrogant to want to be POTUS, but you also have to a strong Will and backbone.

All true. But once again, fighting back against the bully does not make them no longer a bully. If someone breaks into your house and tries to steal your stuff, but you fight them off and call the cops, they've still committed a crime.

Pretty sure you're reaching for the Clinton being bullied thing. But keep trying.
So your argument is that because Obama was bullied, Clinton can't have been?

I actually loved Colbert when he was in character, riffing on O'Reilly. Despite our very differing politics, I was a huge prior fan of his from Exit 57, Strangers with Candy (one of the best shows ever made) and The Daily Show. He was just very very clever with his satire, no matter what your politics.

Might have to check this new one out.
