As G.O.P. Moves to Fill Courts, McConnell Takes Aim at an Enduring Hurdle

WASHINGTON — President Trump is eager to put his conservative imprint on the federal judiciary, but an impediment remains.

Though the Senate has virtually eliminated the ability of the minority party to block appointments to the bench from the Supreme Court on down, individual senators can still thwart nominees from their home states by refusing to sign off on a form popularly known for its color — the blue slip.

Now, with some Democrats refusing to consent as the Trump administration moves to fill scores of judicial vacancies, Senator Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky Republican and majority leader, is for the first time publicly advocating that the blue slip be made strictly advisory when it comes to appeals court nominees — the most powerful judges after those on the Supreme Court.

“My personal view is that the blue slip, with regard to circuit court appointments, ought to simply be a notification of how you’re going to vote, not the opportunity to blackball,” Mr. McConnell said in an interview with The New York Times for “The New Washington” podcast. He said he favored retaining the blue slip authority for lower-level district court judges.
Just wait til the shoe is on the other foot.

“Getting rid of the blue slip would be a mistake,” Mr. Schumer said in an interview. He said he would argue to Mr. McConnell and Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee, that since majority control of the Senate has been in flux in recent years, members of both parties should remember that they could find themselves back in the minority.

“Preserving some of the minority’s power in the Senate has broad support because every one of us knows we’re probably going to be in some of each,” Mr. Schumer said.

a bit of local politics from here in CT - Joe Ganim was mayor of Bridgeport, CT from 1991-2003 - in that time he closed all 3 of the citys notorious housing projects, reclaimed real estate from gangs and criminals in surrounding neighborhoods, and was probably the best mayor the city had in YEARS - he was also taking kickbacks and went prison

he was released in 2010 and elected back into the mayors office in 2015

and hes talking about running for Governor (which is going to be an open race because the current Governor will not be running for re-election)

    and he'll most likely win

Wow, quite a story of a city Democrat leader. CT's top FBI official: Ganim is "the poster boy of corrupt Connecticut politicians"

Exclusive: Rice told House investigators why she unmasked senior Trump officials

Washington (CNN)Former national security adviser Susan Rice privately told House investigators that she unmasked the identities of senior Trump officials to understand why the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates was in New York late last year, multiple sources told CNN.

The New York meeting preceded a separate effort by the UAE to facilitate a back-channel communication between Russia and the incoming Trump White House.

The crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, arrived in New York last December in the transition period before Trump was sworn into office for a meeting with several top Trump officials, including Michael Flynn, the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his top strategist Steve Bannon, sources said.

The Obama administration felt misled by the United Arab Emirates, which had failed to mention that Zayed was coming to the United States even though it's customary for foreign dignitaries to notify the US government about their travels, according to several sources familiar with the matter. Rice, who served as then-President Obama's national security adviser in his second term, told the House Intelligence Committee last week that she requested the names of the Americans mentioned in the classified report be revealed internally, a practice officials in both parties say is common.

    he's not wrong

Ganim comes from a powerful family, his dad founded a law firm and holds a lot of power in Fairfield County

Joe took over as mayor in 93 and in less than 6 years got all the housing projects in the city (which were all crime ridden s**tboxes) shut down or demolished

he also got an arena and ballpark buit
