Australian Justine Damond shot dead by US police in Minneapolis

US police officers have shot dead an Australian woman who reportedly called 911 after hearing a noise near her home in Minneapolis.

Minnesota’s public safety department said a woman was shot in Minneapolis after two officers responded to a callout about a possible assault on Saturday at 11.30pm local time. The police officers did not have their body cameras turned on.
The woman has been named as Justine Damond, who ran meditation workshops at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community. Damond, originally Justine Ruszczyk, used the name of the man she was due to marry in August, Don Damond, the local Star-Tribune reported.

Her stepson, Zac Damond, said she had called police after hearing a noise near her house.

“Two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault just north of the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue S just before 11.30pm Saturday,” the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a statement, according to the Star Tribune. “At one point, an officer fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman.

The fact the cops didn't have their cameras on infuriates me. Now it comes down to a basic "he said, she said" muddle where the cops can claim anything they want to justify the shooting, and potentially get off scot free in an investigation.

Why I’m Leaving the Southern Baptist Convention

But I’ve had enough. Today I am officially renouncing my ordination in the Southern Baptist Convention, the country’s largest Protestant body, with about 15 million members, and the world’s largest Baptist denomination.

My reasoning is simple: As a black scholar of race and a minister who is committed to social justice, I can no longer be part of an organization that is complicit in the disturbing rise of the so-called alt-right, whose members support the abhorrent policies of Donald Trump and whose troubling racial history and current actions reveal a deep commitment to white supremacy.

This decision was not easy. I have fond memories of attending church picnics with my mother. I met my childhood best friend in church. My family has always belonged to churches, and it still does.
An incident last month has compelled me not only to leave, but also to explain why.

During the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting, Dwight McKissic, a prominent black pastor in Arlington, Tex., introduced a resolution that denounced white supremacy and the “retrograde ideologies, xenophobic biases and racial bigotries of the so-called alt-right.” The resolution should have been immediately adopted. It was not.

A contingent of predominantly white, old-guard members refused to take the resolution seriously, even while many black and progressive clergy members advocated its adoption. It was not until chaos ensued that a reworded resolution vowing to “decry every form of racism, including alt-right white supremacy, as antithetical to the Gospel of Jesus Christ” was adopted.

What’s more, while they hesitated to adopt a resolution that condemned white supremacy, they did not hesitate to throw out activists who tried to raise awareness about the ways in which the convention fails its L.G.B.T.Q. members.
    --------

A Resolution Condemning White Supremacy Causes Chaos at the Southern Baptist Convention

The Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting turned chaotic in Phoenix this week over a resolution that condemned white supremacy and the alt-right. On Tuesday, leaders initially declined to consider the proposal submitted by a prominent black pastor in Texas, Dwight McKissic, and only changed course after a significant backlash. On Wednesday afternoon, the body passed a revised statement against the alt-right. But the drama over the resolution revealed deep tension lines within a denomination that was explicitly founded to support slavery.

A few weeks before the meeting was slated to start, McKissic published his draft resolution on a popular Southern Baptist blog called SBC Voices. The language was strong and pointed.

On this date in 2014, “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” published a profile on Sharron Angle, who really, really hates immigrants, running some of the most blatantly racist ad spots about them back in the 2010 election, the last time she ran for the seat, against Sen. Harry Reid. When confronted about her racism by Hispanic constituents, she used the defense that “they don’t look Hispanic to me, they look Asian”, which kind of made things worse. Angle also once tried arguing against rape exceptions in anti-abortion legislation because rape victims “need to make lemons from lemonade”, argues against water fluoridation because she believes the government deliberately poisons the water supply with lead, mercury, and arsenic (Flint, Michigan aside, “deliberately” a government deliberately doing it is insane), wanted to privatize Social Security, and falsely claimed unemployment benefits pay more than entry level jobs. She is also a climate change denier, shared her belief that the 9/11 hijackers came into the country through Canada (again, wrong), wants to eliminate the Department of Energy, Department of Education, and the Environmental Protection Agency, said there should be no separation of church and state in the Constitution, while claiming there are towns in America that have been taken over by Sharia Law. Angle was in the GOP Primary for Harry Reid’s seat again, six years later, but she had already established herself to be the kind of kook that cost the Republicans a shot at winning a Senate majority back in the first Tea Party wave and lost to U.S. House Rep Joe Heck. She seems to be the only one unaware that her career is over.

In both 2015, and in 2016, “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” published profiles of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, whose past we delved deep into, all the way back to 1973 when he worked for a Baptist newspaper called “The Rapture Express” where he would write about the dread menaces of things like women not wearing bras, or wearing short skirts, or gays, or teenagers dancing! OH MY! Back in 1992, while campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat, Huckabee suggested the novel idea of quarantining AIDS patients. In both 2007 and in 2011, he used his newfound media profile on Fox News and conservative talk radio to lament the pregnancies of Jamie Lynn Spears, and Natalie Portman, for happening out of wedlock, which is a slightly different reaction than the defense he put up for the media paying any attention to Bristol Palin being pregnant in 2008. Huckabee has also defended the Confederate flag, and then compares abortion to slavery (he surprise, he supports fetal “Personhood”). Huckabee also praises “historian” and exposed fraud David Barton, and his lies that the United States is a Christian nation that was never intended to have a separation of church and state, saying “every American should be forced at gunpoint to learn from him”. (Because that in no way would be a military indoctrination into a theocracy.) Huckabee not only defended the “legitimiate rape” comments by Congressman Todd Akin, but claimed people were only attacking him “because he was a Christian”. He can simultaneously complain about Beyonce being exploited by “Jay-Z acting like her pimp”, or Miley Cyrus being too scandalous, while he instead goes about performing on bass guitar for Ted Nugent in a rendition of “Cat Scratch Fever”, a song about getting an STD (Nugent, incidentally, also admits to having sex with underage girls numerous times in his heyday). After tensions rose in the wake of the shocking police killings of Alton Sterling and Philandro Castle, Mike Huckabee took it upon himself to respond to the outcry from the Black Lives Matter movement by calling for... the "Male Lives Matter" movement, because he just feels so attacked by all the lady folk. Huckabee, inspired by his Christian faith, advised people to not take in Syrian refugees "just because they're not living a very fancy life", but lied his ass off about a German family who were being deported they were Christians who home-schooled their children… when they weren’t even being deported, at all. Huckabee defended the idea of monitoring mosques, and chastising liberals for suggesting such an act would be a violation of the freedom of religion Muslims, trying to prove liberals were hypocrites about the premise because "they are waging war on Christmas". Huckabee responded to the shooter at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs by condemning him… and then adding a BUT to the condemnation, and pointing out that in his eyes, the people he killed working at the clinic were murderers, too. Huckabee has also called for the impeachment of President Obama for “acting like God”, freaked out over Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend on ESPN during the NFL draft, and threatened to leave the Republican Party should they ever stop fighting to overturn the ruling on same sex marriage. Incidentally, Huckabee has rabidly attacked the Supreme Court since their ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, saying the United States was now “worse than Sodam and Gomorrah”, and that HIS first amendment freedom of religion is being violated because gay people can get married. He’s enough of a hypocrite that he once called a proposed boycott of Chik-Fil-A by people who were upset that they support anti-LGBT causes “economic terrorism”, and then only a few years later, called for a boycott of Doritos for producing a rainbow-dyed product to promote LGBT awareness. Huckabee also creeped everyone right out when he gave his opinion on transgendered bathroom use and said he would have done it as a teen to “get into the ladies’ locker room”. Huckabee is enough of a “victimized Christian” that he complains that “the left won’t rest until there are no more churches” and after news broke that his longtime favorite family, the Duggars were revealed to have turned a blind eye to the fact that their son, Josh Duggar was molesting some of his sisters and their friends, Huckabee defended them. Mike Huckabee continues to occasionally drag his chicken-fried dumb ass onto Fox News to vomit out all sorts of folksy metaphors for why Republicans aren’t that racist or sexist (even when they clearly are doing so), while his nutjob daughter has started lying her ass off as the Deputy Press Secretary for the Trump Administration. Thus we'll summarize by saying he’s one of, if not THE WORST kind of Christian out there, and retire his CSGOPOTD profile at this time and go ahead and take a look at a different wacky Republican today instead. (Current crazy/stupid scoreboard, is now 593-25, since this was established in July 2014.)

Welcome to the 593rd original “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” profile, where we’re going to be talking about Georgia State Senator Renee Unterman, who has served in the Georgia state legislature in its House of Representatives back in 1998, and moving up into the Georgia State Senate in 2002. She’s been highly conservative for almost two decades, but it was back in 2016 that she started to draw attention to herself for a bizarre determination to use her position as the head of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services to unilaterally prevent hearings on solving the problem of getting funding going towards the state testing thousands of untested rape kits sitting in a back log, the victims who allowed them to be collected wondering if they would ever get tested, and their attackers ever face justice. Unterman’s bizarre defense for this was to claim there just WASN’T a backlog of rape kits under her watch, because if there us, the problem would have already been solved, “Johnny on the spot. There was, obviously, bipartisan support to do this from both Democrats, and several Georgia Republicans in the State Senate. The bizarre choice of Unterman to do this earned her a name-drop on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee in March of 2016.

Thankfully, there is a happy ending to the story, as the sponsor of the bill, Democratic Rep. Scott Holcomb, was aided by the Republican Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston, The whole legislative miracle of two parties working together to side-step an obstructionist misanthrope made it into a follow-up segment on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee in March 2017... and Renee Unterman decided it would be a great idea to try and paint herself as the victim in this story, calling Sam Bee “vile”, and getting really salty about the fact that Holcomb and Ralston were asking each other, “What the f*** is wrong with Renee?” because POTTYMOUTHS. Which, foul language is a real problem that something should be done about, unlike untested rape kits, AMIRITE, YOU GUYS?

As we discovered upon further research, this isn’t the only time that Unterman has used her position to unilaterally block common sense legislation, as she also did so to block a medical marijuana bill back in 2014, as well. With great power, comes a great responsibility to do nothing with it, like Bizarro Spider-Man would say.

The rest of Unterman’s voting record looks like you’d probably expect from someone who justifies all the s***ty things she does on being from “Red meat” country:

    • February 28th, 2006: Unterman co-sponsors SB 396, one of the most bonkers gun laws in the past 20 years in our country (and that’s saying something), which would have allowed Georgia residents to even use deadly force to defend their property, in public, as long as the weapon used was legal.
    • March 3rd, 2009: Unterman votes for stricter Voter ID measures aimed at disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters in Georgia.
    • February 4th, 2010: Unterman goes along with some of her colleagues’ tinfoil hat conspiracy theory and votes for a ban on human microchip implantations… which weren’t actually even happening.
    • March 30th, 2010: Unterman votes for SB 67, an attempt at making drivers’ tests to be given in English only, which has also been covered in court rulings as unconstitutional.
    • March 7th, 2012: Unterman votes for SB 649, Georgia Republicans’ attempt at banning picketing outside of corporations, because that’s not a clear violation of the 1st Amendment right to assemble, whatsoever.
    • March 26th, 2012: Unterman votes for HB 942, a ban on abortion at 20 weeks.
    • March 27th, 2012: Unterman votes for HB 861, an attempt by Georgia Republicans to institute drug testing on welfare recipients, the expensive and failed conservative policy that is also a violation of the Fourth Amendment.
    • February 17th, 2014: Unterman sponsors HB 990, a bill to block the Medicaid Expansion in Georgia.
    • February 1st, 2016: Unterman sponsors SB 308, a bill to create state grants for “prenancy crisis centers”, organizations that have a nasty habit of lying to patients in the interests of trying to steer them away from birth control or abortions.
    • February 29th, 2016: Unterman votes for SR 675, to try and make English the official language of Georgia. Again, the Supreme Court has been pretty clear about how these sorts of anti-immigrant bills are unconstitutional. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizon...ish_v._Arizona
    • March 16th, 2016: Unterman votes for HB 757, which would allow religious officials to refuse marriage services to same sex couples.

Unterman has not even faced a challenger in either a primary, or a general election for her seat in the Georgia State Senate since, as near as we can tell, at least as far back as 2008. Maybe after a decade of her not seeing an opponent, it’s a good time for folks to start considering making a run at her while she’s busy trying to help rapists get away with all the raping, and instead, focusing all her energy on attacking television comedians? Right, right… we know, that’s crazy talk and we should just let her keep on trucking right along.

Can't say I'm surprised. Considering vast swaths of the South still proudly fly the Confederate flag, it stands to reason that even the bible thumpers would be reluctant to let go of their white supremacy schtick.

If I didn't know any better, I'd think that Trump's disaster of a presidency, the Russia scandal that shows how much they're putting party before country, the GOP's pathetic healthcare "reform" bills, and the unflinching bigotry the party's extremist have continued to make emblematic of the party at the cost of alienating moderates... their simple incapability to GOVERN while in control of the White House, Congressional House, and Senate (even re-writing filibuster rules to make it easier to ramrod through their agenda, but still frequently failing)... why, if I didn't know any better, that might explain how polls have showed Trump and the GOP have continued hemorrhaging support over the past few months.

They're not all there yet. There are still many who see the world as their enemy and Trump as their saviour, just like with most cults. Breaking them free from their gnorance and fear might be near impossible.

The only thing that might do it would be if all News Media took a strict vow of political neutrality and dedication to truth and facts.

Fox News is even starting to break ranks, what with that conversation with Shep Smith and Chris Wallace last week. That after an exodus that saw Greta & Megyn leave... Their ratings are the lowest they've been in like a decade. Someone broke the transmitter that they had that was keeping their viewers "asleep", like at the end of "They Live".

(LOL. I was gonna link video to the ending, but I forgot about the woman making love to a guy who's one of the aliens... so... nudity nixed that.)

It's as I've said here numerous times, Trump's legion of lemmings are devoted solely to him, not the party, that's why the hierarchy of Republicans have tiptoed around Sunkist Satan from day one, afraid of pissing him off for fear he'd give the GOP a tiny middle finger and declare himself an independent for 2020, taking millions of votes with him. As for the media and that strict adherence to truth and facts, that won't work with the Trump cultists, all Spray Tan Don has to do is utter those two magic words, "FAKE NEWS" and that's all she wrote. I fear there's no rehabilitating those people, they're in it with Marmalade Monkey to the bitter end.

Incredible CNN interview with Trump voters: Half of panel participants now regret their vote

CNN New Day host Alisyn Camerota sat down with six Donald Trump voters and their comments reflect exactly how much trouble the struggling popular vote loser really is in. It’s no wonder a new ABC News poll shows him to be the least popular president in 70 years:

I know it's not a popular POV but I really have no empathy with Trump voters. His debate performances were mostly juvenile insults like making up names for his opponents and his plans were devoid of detail. His "rallies" are more suitable for a wrestling TV show. If people had read about his checkered history as a businessman, that should have been a big clue also. I keep going back to the Trump University case that I read about several years ago, before he officially entered the race. Anyone that operates like that has few scruples and really doesn't give a rat's booty about "the little guy". He's a liar, a cheat, a repulsive misogynist and totally unworthy. It was right in front of you all the time, if you cared to look for it.

In all honesty, the separation between the alt-right & the Republican establishment could yield the rise of a third party in this country.

I always like to use the Kang line about third parties, but I won't be surprised if a radical party is created in the aftermath of the Trump administration.

Those supporters are getting more and more sway, it feels.
