After an Immigration Raid, a City’s Students Vanish

David Morales teaches social studies at Mayfield High School, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a city of a hundred thousand people, located fifty miles north of the Mexican border. Some of his students are the children of undocumented immigrants, and a few of them might even be undocumented themselves. He doesn’t know which ones, exactly, and he doesn’t care. “When they’re in my classroom, I’m there to teach them,” he told me recently. “I make a point of not knowing, unless the student wants me to.” His classes are small, with around twenty students each, and when any kid is out, “it’s obvious,” he said. “But last month it was painfully obvious.”

On February 15th, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers conducted a raid in Las Cruces, arresting people at a trailer park on the outskirts of town. The raid came a few weeks after President Trump signed two executive orders, signalling his plans to fulfill a campaign promise of cracking down on undocumented immigrants. Rumors spread that there were further raids planned, though none took place. On February 16th, a Thursday, Las Cruces’s public schools saw a sixty-per-cent spike in absences compared to the previous week—twenty-one hundred of the district’s twenty-five thousand students missed school. Two thousand students stayed away again the next day. Attendance returned to normal the following week, which made the two-day rash of absences all the more pronounced. “It was alarming,” Greg Ewing, the district’s superintendent, told me. News of the raid caused such fear in the community that Ewing wrote a letter to parents on the 16th, in English and Spanish, reassuring them that “we do not anticipate any ICE activity occurring on school campuses.”

Trump Is Dragging Us Into Another War... And No One Is Talking About It

While Americans have been focused on the ACA and Trump’s ties to Russia, Trump has been busy expanding the American troop presence inside Syria. This is not good.

Donald Trump handed the German chancellor Angela Merkel a bill — thought to be for more than £300bn — for money her country “owed” Nato for defending it when they met last weekend, German government sources have revealed.

The bill — handed over during private talks in Washington — was described as “outrageous” by one German minister.

“The concept behind putting out such demands is to intimidate the other side, but the chancellor took it calmly and will not respond to such provocations,” the minister said.

Trump has criticised a number of Nato countries — Germany among them — for insufficient military spending, leaving America to pick up more than its fair share of the tab. He wants them to honour a commitment made in 2014 to invest 2% of their GDP in defence — a target met at present only by the US, Britain, Estonia, Greece and Poland.

Trump appeared to go one step further during his meeting with Merkel. Taking 2002 as a starting point, his officials calculated the extent to which German defence spending had fallen short of the 2% target each year, added the amount together — and then put interest on top.

US officials told their German counterparts they chose 2002 because, they claim, that was the year Merkel’s predecessor, Gerhard Schröder, committed his country to higher defence spending.

Neither side revealed the total, though official figures suggest a cumulative shortfall of more than £250bn. Addition of compound interest would take the amount past £300bn. According to diplomatic sources, Trump had his staff prepare similar calculations for all other Nato members below the 2% target.

A source close to Merkel was dismissive. “The president has a very unorthodox view on Nato defence spending,” the source said. “The alliance is not a club with a membership fee. The commitments relate to countries’ investment in their defence budgets.”

Merkel is said to have “ignored the provocation”, but did commit to raise German defence spending gradually, although she asked for spending on international development to be taken into consideration.

You know, outside of the fact that Trump doesn't seem to understand how this works with the Nato and all, I was for a second wondering if he really wants Germany to become a powerful military force again.

Right now we are 9th in the world with moderate spending.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...y_expenditures

If we'd go in with the 2%, that would raise us up quite a bit.

Then I remembered that he is literally advised by NEO-NAZIs, and I want like "Oh, ok, that explains why they want Germany to have a powerful military."

Fox & Friends in the henhouse: how Trump's beloved show wields power

“I like that group of three people,” Donald Trump said this month. “They had a man who was saying: ‘Trump is the greatest president ever and there will never be one like him.’”

Trump was referring to Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt and Brian Kilmeade – the hosts of Fox & Friends – and a segment he had seen on the show. It’s one of the president’s favorite programs, and it may well be the most influential television program in the world.

On 7 March, the president tweeted five times in direct response to topics discussed during the three-hour Fox & Friends, on the Fox News Channel. It wasn’t a one-off.

On 29 November, Trump suggested that anyone caught burning the American flag should lose their citizenship or spend “a year in jail”. He sent his tweet at 6.55am ET – 30 minutes after Fox & Friends ran a piece about a protest in which someone burned the American flag.

Meet Daryle Lamont Jenkins, Insatiable Doxxer of Fascists and Nazis

Jenkins’ extremism fixation started early. “As a kid, I always wanted to know where the Klan went,” Jenkins says. “I stayed curious.” He credits being an Air Force police office with honing his observation skills, but the person responsible for kickstarting his extremist hunting career is pretty surprising. “Oprah had a show on skinheads,” Jenkins says. “I didn’t want to lose that information, so I bought the transcript.”

That very 1988 move led Jenkins to record and catalogue as many white supremacist public appearances as he could find. And by watching the tapes and combing through transcripts for patterns, he began to understand the shape of various far-right worlds—from skinheads to the Klan to neo-Nazis to the Christian terrorist group the Army of God. “If you know the buzzwords, you know what you’re dealing with,” Jenkins says. “Someone saying they’re a ‘race realist’ or ‘identitarian’? That’s code for white supremacist.” And once he’d heard the magic, racist words—which he’d often pick up while infiltrating protests—he’d find his way into meetings, membership lists, home addresses, and places of employment.
So he launched One People’s Project, a far right watchdogging site he says is meant to be a resource for employers, law enforcement, and the general public. Its taglines are “Hate Has Consequences” and “Fight Racism, Fight Fascism & Have a Nice Day!” Jenkins is similarly cheerful and uncompromising.

He’s also kind of sneaky. “Thank god for Facebook and Twitter,” Jenkins says. “They’re one of the great beauties of the world today.” In addition to just searching through people’s social media feeds, antifascists also create sock puppets—dummy accounts that start out with a Pepe the Frog banner and work their way up to following David Duke and tweeting about #whitegenocide, gathering new friends along the way. Then they dox the new friends.
While I was talking to Jenkins, he was looking through YouTube for signs of James Jackson, who traveled from Baltimore to New York City to kill black men. (Today, Jackson was charged with murdering Timothy Caughman, whom he stabbed with a sword.) “We know he’s a member of a hate group, but we don’t know which,” he says, looking over one potential account. “So I’m looking through his subscribers. If this is in fact James Jackson, he likes Ramzpaul, who is tight with the alt-right crowd.” After he verifies such information, he’ll post it to One People’s Project.

If Jenkins had been investigating this case prior to Jackson committing murder, he probably would have gone full nuclear on him: These days, Jenkins tries to only publish the addresses of people making violent threats, though he used to be a lot less discriminating. And he’ll still publish people’s names, schools, and place of work. “You play alt-right and parade around with Pepe the Frog, wait 20 years when you’re trying to get your job, and this comes up on a background check,” Jenkins says. “It’s not revenge. It’s information.” It’s also a harsh reminder of Jenkins’ catchphrase: Hate has consequences, even if you’re just an idiot kid with a penchant for 4chan.

Two years ago on this date, “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” posted a profile of Cathie Adams, a former National Republican Committe member, and Chairwoman of the Texas Republican Party who compared President Obama to Hitler, warning of the United Nations taking over the planet, refusing to support cancer research for fear it could lead to human cloning experiments, and that she blamed the high teenage pregnancy rate in Texas on illegal immigrants (and not her party's campaign against sex education unless it's abstinenance-only). She also was convinced extreme conservative Grover Norquist is a secret Muslim infiltrator... because he grew a beard. Rounding out Adams' kookiness was her belief that people were leaving states that had legalized marriage for ones that opposed it in droves, her quote that anti-abortion protesters screaming in the Texas capitol were "what evil must sound like emanating from the Pit of Hell", and that Muslim Americans were prepping for a "stealth jihad" and are waiting to "shoot you in the back". Adams is, and this is really saying something... too insane for even the Texas Republican Party, who jettisoned her after less than a year after her election, leaving her .

One year ago today, “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” posted a profile of Lee Terry, the former eight-term Congressman who represented Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999-2015. Who responded to a reporter's question during the 2013 Goverment Shutdown as to whether he was keeping his paycheck by saying, “Dang straight. I've got a nice house and a kid in college, and I'll tell you we cannot handle it. Giving our paycheck away when you still worked and earned it? That's just not going to fly.”Less than a year later, Rep. Terry voted against a minimum wage increase, then justified it by saying he "hadn't earned a pay raise since 2008." Make sure the guy with a six figure salary gets his first, right? Through his sixteen years in office, Terry's voting record included support for a constitutional amendment to allow government buildings to erect monuments of the Ten Commandments, voting for the Terry Schiavo Incapacitated Persons Protection Bill, co-sponsoring a resolution towards creating a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, voting against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", and even the Zadroga Bill, to provide healthcare for first responders from 9/11. Among many other heartless conservative stances. Even in his Republican-leaning district and in a year that strongly favored Republicans, Lee Terry was enough of a selfish tool that he was jettisoned from office in 2014, moving on to work as a lobbyist. We'll start profiling a different wacky Republican on this date instead. (Current crazy/stupid scoreboard, is now 568-20, since this was established in July 2014.)

    Tom Hooker

Welcome to the 568th original “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” profile, where today, we’ll be talking about Tom Hooker, a former teacher and former three-term member of the Michigan House of Representatives who was swept into office with the help of the 2010 Tea Party Wave, and went out of office in a homophobic blaze of glory during his final term serving the Great Lakes State, eventually falling victim to term limits. And when we say it was a homophobic blaze of glory, we're not joking. Tom Hooker, who through his tenure was even opposed to same sex couples adopting children and sponsored a resolution in the Michigan state legislature to ignore the Supreme Court's Obergefell v. Hodges ruling on same-sex marriage in December of 2015. He even led a rally at the state capitol where hundreds railed against the idea of marriage equality, and included fellow CSGOPOTD Alumni like Patrick Colbeck. Where things get really interesting is that during his speech to the crowd, Tom Hooker showed the people of Michigan that he is in desperate need of a civics lesson, because he doesn't understand the point of the judicial branch:

All right, that first sentence, at least, is true. But what Hooker seemed to be failing to understand is... Obergefell v. Hodges was not the passage of a same sex marriage law, but overturning any bans that were on it nationally, and thus legalizing it. It's... not complicated.

Fighting a crusade that was going positively nowhere must have been frustrating for Hooker, because only a month later, he submitted a bill to attempt to defund Planned Parenthood clinics in Michigan. The proposed bill, however, was not written so well by Hooker (go figure) and would not have affected Planned Parenthood services in Michigan, because its funding comes from the federal government. Still, Hooker refused to admit his quest was in vain, telling the press, “I’ve voted against four state budgets where any state taxpayer funding went to an organization whose primary purpose is aborting unborn children… the goal of HB 4145 is to make this permanent.” Maybe, however, it should have been clear that Tom Hooker's hatred of Planned Parenthood had a poor basis in reality a few months earlier in September of 2015 when he claimed that Planned Parenthood teaches sex education "so they can drum up more abortion business".

It’s illegal to hand out condoms to young people as they exit the class, but what they’re doing is they’re handing out the condoms in class, they’re practicing on a cucumber or something similar, familiarizing themselves with the use and then Planned Parenthood conveniently tells them they can get the devices at Planned Parenthood clinics and how easy it is to get them without the knowledge of parents. The only dealing that I did with birth control devices (when I was a teacher) was I gave the students the failure rates of all of them. The failure rate obviously tells you there is not safe sex except saved sex. To avoid sex is the only guarantee that you’re not going to get pregnant.”
We'll note, of course that failure rates for condoms are actually much higher when people aren't educated on how to use them properly, and shake our heads in frustration that his man was ever allowed to teach.

Looking at the rest of Tom Hooker's voting record, you can see how his Christian values taught him not only to fight against abortion and LGBT rights, but to help the poor and hungry... WE'RE JUST JOKING, HE'S AWFUL. Yeah, throughout his legislative career, Hooker voted against minimum wage increases, and voted to drug test welfare recipients. Just like Jesus would have wanted. The fact that he was also a staunch supporter of stricter Voter ID laws that were created to curtail a statistically non-existent phenomenon at the cost of disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters only makes us happier that six years was all his career lasted in the Michigan state legislature. We would not argue with anyone who said that's six years too long, however.

Alone in the Wild for a Year, TV Contestants Learn Their Show Was Canceled

Ever hear those stories of WWII Soldiers who are discovered on deserted islands years after the war ended?

The remaining contestants on a reality television series have emerged after surviving 12 months in the Scottish wilderness — fending off hunger, infighting and fatigue — only to learn that the show stopped broadcasting after four episodes, the last of them in August.

The show, “Eden,” was billed as a unique social experiment in which 23 men and women living in isolation “would take on the challenge of building a new life and creating a society from scratch,” according to a statement promoting the show.

The contestants were taken to a 600-acre estate on the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, which is known for its forests, lochs and beaches.

But “Eden” proved to be anything but paradise.

Over time, all but 10 contestants quit the show, The Press and Journal of Aberdeen, Scotland, reported. Those who left cited concerns about health and safety, boredom and swarms of tiny biting insects called midges.

Flynn And Nunes Met With Turkish Officials In Jan. How Many Dots Are There?!

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Woolsey and other people present at the meeting confirmed that Flynn was coordinating with officials from the cabinet of right-wing Turkish Pres. Recep Tayyip Erdogan in anticipation of extraditing Fethullah Gulen back to Turkey should Trump win the presidency.

The “dead of night” operation was intended to circumvent normal U.S. extradition laws, Woolsey said. The meeting took place on Sep. 19, and Woolsey said he arrived late only to be startled and alarmed that the discussion was treading into potentially illegal territory.
Nunes was certainly a member of the Trump regime’s transition team, but the article above describes his role on the intelligence committee.

Why was he there? Did he notify any other members of the intelligence committee that he was there in an official capacity? And most importantly, how the hell can he run an investigation where one of the main subjects of the investigation may be involved in an illegal relationship with a foreign power, and where Nunes may have participated (wittingly or unwittingly) in a meeting that will certainly be investigated?!

I think it's funny that for all his talk about what a great deal maker he is, the president couldn't even win over people in his own party so he took his ball and went home after only two weeks.
