"Doctor Strange's" Wong Will Be 'More of a Drill Sergeant' Than a Manservant

According to Benedict Wong, "Doctor Strange" will take a new approach to Wong.

Wong will appear in Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange," but the character won't be ripped straight from the comics. "The Martian" star Benedict Wong, who plays Wong in the film, revealed that "Doctor Strange" will take a new approach to the character.

"There isn't any martial arts for Wong in 'Doctor Strange,' actually. He's more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He's one of the masters of sorcery."

In the comics, Wong acts as Strange's vastly skilled and versatile sidekick, filling such duties as assisting in occult matters, performing martial arts, tending to Strange's affairs and watching over Strange's body while the Sorcerer Supreme astral projects. However, it seems as though the film has a few other ideas in mind for the character.

Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwitel Ejiofor and more, "Doctor Strange" opens on November 4, 2016.

    Note- in the comics now.
    Wong (Earth-616)
Wong is an expert in the martial arts of Kamar-Taj, achieving great mastery over it, although he has rarely used them in recent years. Hence, although Wong can overpower many adversaries, he is no longer a match for a master of the martial arts who keeps himself at or near peak condition; Wong has even been shown capable of directly driving off the likes of the Nisanti demon-enhanced the Hood in moments through sheer will and physical prowess, despite Robbins having the advantage of surprise, the guidance of Dormammu and a formidable gun capable of firing bullets splashed with demonic fire. Ronin has described him as a "magician's apprentice" and he was deemed sufficiently worthy to be one of dozens of candidate for the vacant role of Sorcerer Supreme by Agamotto through his Eye (though ultimately fails to inherit the title from his master to Brother Voodoo). Wong, as an Earth human, does indeed however possess the potential to utilize magic (despite a statement to the Defenders during a clash with the cult of Devil-Slayer that he is "unschooled in the mystic arts"), has witnessed Strange use a variety of many brands of mystical spells, and has performed enchantments of reasonable power and varying effects recently at the Sanctum Sanctorum. Wong also appears to be now skilled in uttering mystic incantations sufficiently accurately, as he did so while reading from a spellbook in an arcane language not of his mother tongue or English through the Orb of Agamotto when the Sorcerer Supreme was stabbed in Japan with the New Avengers.
    Weaknesses

Wong's skill in magic, even recently, is nowhere near that of a truly adept mystic, and thus would be at a disadvantage while confronting a superhuman, whether versed in occult means or not.
    Paraphernalia

    Transportation

    Magical teleportation; manual walking

    Wong

    In other media
    Television

    # Wong figured prominently in the 1978 made-for-TV movie/series pilot Dr. Strange, played by Clyde Kusatsu.

    # Wong appeared alongside Doctor Strange in the 1990s Spider-Man animated series voiced by George Takei. Wong wielded twin swords that were mystically enhanced.

    # Wong has made cameo appearances in The Super Hero Squad Show.

    Film
    # Wong is a master sorcerer and Strange's mentor in Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme voiced by Paul Nakauchi. This version of Wong has a full head of (grey) hair.

    # Wong will appear in the upcoming 2016 Doctor Strange film, portrayed by Benedict Wong.

    Video games
    * Wong appeared as a non-playable character in the game Marvel: Ultimate Alliance voiced by Michael Hagiwara. He is seen in the Sanctum Sanctorum and even requests for the heroes to find the Eye of the Shadow Queen in Mephisto's Realm. He has special dialogue with Doctor Strange.

I guess but we haven't seen shit on screen. So the average joe doesn't see any LGBT representation.

Doesn't change the fact Singer has only developed Mystique and just started fixing Jean. So he has shat the bed on some of the strongest women in all of comics and Fox X-men suck at diversity but don't mind stealing from the Civil Rights movement. Storm is an abomination. The only time we got strong POC representation was flash forward in DOFP so we can watch them die. All of Jubilee Scenes got cut. Storm origin was mutilated, she is weak as hell after a powerup from Apocalypse meanwhile Magneto can shake the whole planet. Storm can fire some weaksauce lightning and barely blow a car. Sorry I expect 2012 disaster level wreckage from her. Psylocke? She looked like bad cosplay and couldn't beat Beast after a powerup. I am not even going to talk about the Men of Color. Cause there is nothing to talk about.
