Default Search Function - The Best Way To Use It

I have often found myself having trouble using the search function on the forum.

If there is a thread I am looking for, I cannot seem to enter the right parameters to find it. What is the best way to find a thread, given a keyword that I remember from the thread title or if I remember a specific word within the actual thread?

Advanced search using a keyword from the title works best for me, I find.

    I'll try it. Thanks Conn.

Hi, just trying to find tips on the search function.

First though, with search results, I get results showing me the thread, but I'm not sure how to find the specific post. Is there a way without needing to read every single page?

In Advanced Search you should be able to see a choice between "Threads" or "Posts."

Sorry, I meant after getting my search results. Is there a way of jumping straight to the post inside a thread?

I was looking for any discussion regarding a specific title in one of the bigger threads and didn't really want to read over 1000 pages...

In your search results (for posts), there's 3 links; for the thread the post was found in, the user who posted it, and a direct link to the post in the thread.

Thanks, but I must be searching wrong.
I only get the thread and the user of the last post and the forum it belongs in. Links to the thread only go to the first or last.

I'm searching "madman allred" checking both places for all posts (one is a tick and one is a scroll selection). I'd like to search inside the bigger threads for discussion on releases.

It sounds like what I was talking to you about in my first reply. You're seeing the results of searching for Threads, not Posts.
    To be specific:

    • Advanced Search
    • Make sure you're using the Search Single Content Type tab
    • Type your keyword(s)
    • Scroll down to the Additional Options
    • In Show Results As, select Posts

    Oh thanks very much!
It was the "Single Content Type" tab. It was defaulted to the other one. What is multiple content then? I thought that was what I needed for multiple keywords.

    Thanks again!

In Search Multiple Content Types, the types of searches available are listed just below the tabs (All Types/Posts/Forums/Visitor Messages). And as the name suggests, you can select more than one at a time.
