I discovered his art reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in the 80s. On my shelves the book is set next to Dante's Divine Comedy illustrated by Gustave Doré - outside the comics field...

Great samples posted here. I wish I had a copy of his Frankenstein. I did have the collaboration with Steven King, the GN "Cycle of the Werewolf" but I think I gave it to my niece.

Bendis posted a link to this wonderful interview from the 1980's documentary "Masters of Comic Book Art" I think his craft transcends being categorized as comic book art. He was a master illustrator.

He was a singular talent. There was no other comic artist like him.

One of the most singular artists in comics history. A mega talent, and by all accounts a wonderful person besides.

First known pro I ever met, at my first ever convention. Such a soft spoken, sweet guy. Should have slowed down long enough to talk to him more. Stop, and talk to the legends, people. They're leaving us fast.
"People look at us and see the poor and the mad, but they’re looking at us through the bar of their cages.

There’s a palace in your head, boy.

Learn to live in it always. " -- Grant Morrison
